Winning a coveted Gold Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023 is this wonderful balcony garden, The St George Alight Here, by garden designer Emma Tipping.
Designed as a place to escape the pressures of life, this is a space to relax and sit with a drink after work, a morning coffee or a book at the weekend. It aims to create the peaceful yet playful atmosphere of a local pub.
With rubbish bins repurposed as containers and benches made from reclaimed railway sleepers, Emma set out to showcase how mundane materials can create something special. Many of the plants, in citrussy tones of green and orange and contrasting dark pink and pale blue, are fragrant and/or edible as well as beautiful.
My personal favourites include Akebia quinata, Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata ‘Black Barlow’ and Lupinus ‘Masterpiece’. And I just love the green tiling!
